Lifeless- “NLFTW” ft. John Barlow
Right as we were just starting to record NLFTW, Animal Haus had recently released some of their first songs. I had known John for many years but I would have never guessed such an abrasive, powerful, yet melodic voice could come out of a man I had always viewed as a lovable, happy-go-lucky teddy bear.
When we brought up the idea of having him sing on the title track of the record during the acoustic break, his reply was something along the lines of "Oh yeah, I got that shit don't you worry." When he had finally come to the studio to record his part, while Len was setting up the equipment, me and John had started entertaining ourselves with an electronic Piano. Before you knew it, we were all singing a rendition of the Eurythmics' "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)"... and not in the Eurythmics' style either - in total Marilyn Manson fashion. I was singing deep tones and John was singing obnoxiously high tones... It's little things like that I remember about John. He could always entertain a light up a room no matter how big the audience, be it 3 people or 300.
After our little cover session, John stepped into the recording booth (which was basically a closet) and in one take, totally leveled the recording and blew us away. We had no idea what to expect, but when it was all said and done, it was the perfect fit both lyrically and style wise. It is undoubtedly the most stand-out and memorable part of the entire record and it stood on it's own two feet... yet blended perfectly with we had going on musically.
Listening to that song is bitter-sweet now... He is literally the last voice you hear on the record and as much as his part sends chills down my spine and makes me smile, it now makes me miss him. Every single time. He was a great man that left behind a local legacy that will never be forgotten, by Lifeless or anyone else who knew him.
